The Road Not Taken (White) —The R&D Story Behind Feiyu's "Magnolia White"

Among the many colors available for windows and doors, white alone stands as the most elegant.

But before today, no white finish in the window and door industry could long withstand the corrosive sea air, the scorching sun, and the elements. Within three to five years, it would corrode, yellow, and lose its luster.

Until Magnolia White.

Feiyu's "Magnolia White" was long in the making, but its origins trace back to an overseas order.

For a architectural complex in Huntington Beach, California, the owner and designer insisted on white windows and doors throughout. Local brands' white coating processes could not meet the requirements for weather and corrosion resistance—they couldn't hold up against the sea breeze and relentless sun. So they turned to Chinese brands.

But at the time, Feiyu's white coating process was not yet Magnolia White. We lacked confidence that it could resist salt spray corrosion and years of sun exposure without discoloring. During the proposal discussions, the owner asked sincerely, "But doesn't China have 'China White'?"

Chinese white porcelain, renowned worldwide as "China White," possesses an elegant, pure, jade-like color along with exceptional durability, weather resistance, and wear resistance. That question ignited a fire in the heart of this Chinese brand. We believed we could replicate the texture and resilience of China White on the surface of windows and doors. This R&D initiative was later named "Half a Billion White" within Feiyu.

Half a century and half a billion yuan to create a white that never fades.

To achieve this white, Feiyu made enormous investments. Day and night, our R&D team pondered: How could we make this white as resistant to prolonged humidity as Chinese lacquer, and as capable of retaining its luster through the ages as China White porcelain?

We never underestimated the challenge, but the process proved even harder than expected. Overcoming the inherent flaws of traditional white coatings could not be achieved through piecemeal improvements to conventional processes. The only way was to break completely from the past and undertake a full-scale upgrade of the entire coating production line.

The cost was nearly half a billion yuan, the timeline stretched to a thousand days. This was truly a difficult path. But we knew from the start that the "road not taken (white)" was destined to have no shortcuts, no quick fixes. It was a road we chose to travel, fully aware of its hardships. Over a thousand days and nights—trial and error, tearing down and rebuilding, refining formulas and processes—Feiyu paved this "white road" with extraordinary perseverance, finally reaching our destination. We succeeded in replicating on door and window surfaces the matte texture of China White porcelain and its fine, skin-like, velvety feel. At last, white coating could be as enduring and incorruptible as Chinese lacquer.

Feiyu named this white—crafted with a renewed spirit of Chinese artisanship, as weather-resistant as Chinese lacquer, as durable as Chinese ceramics, and as beautiful to behold as the Chinese magnolia—"Magnolia White." The lasting beauty of Magnolia White can only be proven by time itself, but we couldn't ask our customers to wait decades for that proof. Therefore, Feiyu subjected Magnolia White to over a dozen rigorous, extreme tests.

4,000 hours of continuous sun exposure, and Magnolia White remains unchanged.

We conducted an accelerated aging test on Magnolia White using xenon lamp irradiation for 4,000 hours—the highest industry standard. The UV irradiance reached 0.55 W/m², more intense than the total UV irradiance at noon on a summer day in Hawaii. The hourly irradiation intensity was approximately 5 to 8 times that of natural sunlight in the same wavelength band. 4,000 hours of irradiation is equivalent to 3.65 years of uninterrupted sun exposure during a Hainan summer.

The results showed a gloss retention rate of 100%. No dulling, no fading, no yellowing, no visible aging. The color difference (∆E*ab) was only 0.6, imperceptible to the human eye. Windows and doors finished with Magnolia White, even in coastal areas or high-altitude regions with year-round sun exposure, will remain as white as new after many years of use.

72 hours of continuous strong acid rain corrosion, and Magnolia White passes with flying colors.

The CASS test used for Magnolia White has a corrosion rate approximately 8 times faster than the neutral salt spray test over the same duration, roughly equivalent to 24 years of natural environmental corrosion. It is the most severe of all salt spray tests. We used a strong acid solution (pH < 3.3) in a continuous spray for 72 hours to simulate a highly corrosive environment—more aggressive than heavy acid rain (pH < 4.7). After multiple rounds of repeated testing, Magnolia White showed no signs of corrosion whatsoever, achieving the highest national standard rating of 10 for salt spray corrosion resistance. Even under the combined assault of high salt content in marine atmospheres (such as splash zones and coastal platforms), strong UV radiation, and high temperature/humidity, Magnolia White withstands the test with ease.

As delicate as skin to the touch, as hard as iron on the surface.

Although Magnolia White feels as warm, smooth, and delicate as jade or skin to the touch, professional testing shows that its coating hardness reaches 5H—far exceeding the national standard baseline requirement (≥3H). It is more wear- and scratch-resistant than ordinary white coatings, requiring no excessive care in daily use.

These are but a fraction of the rigorous tests Magnolia White has undergone. Windows and doors finished with Magnolia White also meet or far exceed national technical requirements in 12 professional evaluations, including alkali resistance, coating thickness, dry/wet film adhesion, and appearance quality.

The road Feiyu chose for Magnolia White was not easy, but it led to a new height.

It has reset the standard for durability and weather resistance of white coatings on windows and doors.

And it has finally made it possible for everyone who ever wanted—but hesitated—to choose white to realize their ideal home.
